Raised and trained by his grandfather, Jiro is a highschooler who has followed in the family tradition of lethal ninja-hood. But Jiro is a complicated teen-age operative. His peculiar, innate talent for communing with all manners of animal life shines as he cares for the local community of stray cats and dogs. Still, while he won’t hesitate to let his fists do the talking when his temper flairs, it does nothing to diminish his genuine goodness. Then life takes a strange turn when Jiro meets Rago and the two are pulled into a war against the so-called mononoke. Luckily, Jiro is now member of the Bureau of Espionage’s special unit, Black Torch.

Rago may be unquestionably cold and independent, yet it’s his warmth and rare intellect that manage to shine through. When in their thirst for power the mononoke launch a strike against Rago, he is left for dead, until, that is, Jiro comes to the rescue. The surprising gesture not only earns Rago’s trust but sparks an unlikely alliance.

As member of Black Torch at the Bureau of Espionage, Ichika is the only daughter of the renowned and respected Kishimojin family of spies and has from a young age persevered through years of demanding training. Her exceptional work ethic is the driving force behind her quest to reach the apex of achievement in espionage and to face responsibility head-on. Aside from her palpably strong dislike for mononoke, her demeanor toward Jiro and his comrade Rago is equally severe. Ichika’s sense of justice and responsibility, with equal parts determination and seriousness, are second to none.

Reiji, the latest rookie of the Bureau of Espionage’s Black Torch squad, hails from another famous family of espionage, the Kiriharas, and is an expert in his ancestral style of sword fighting by the same name. Calm and collected, Reiji lives and breathes rationality. Still, that isn’t enough for Reiji to keep his cool when crossing paths with the emotionally hot-headed Jiro. Behind his gentlemanly demure disposition, Reiji holds a nearly unshakable pride and readiness for whatever life and battle hurls his way.

While his independent, anarchist streak has turned him into somewhat of an outsider with his peers and a pariah with his superiors, he’s also an undeniably strong leader who has the complete trust of his subordinates.

As one of Shiba’s select subordinates, Usami often finds herself at the mercy of her superior’s capricious, nonconformist ways. She also knows that Shiba genuinely cares about her and the rest of the squad. And for that, she gladly confides in him. Earnest and gentle, Usami looks after Jiro and the rest of the unit with an almost incessant but endearing smile.
